Waterford Crystal was founded in 1783 in the city of Waterford. At that time, Ireland was famous for glass making. Rich families across Europe wanted beautiful crystal objects for their homes. The company closed for a time in the 1800s, but it reopened in 1947. Since then, Waterford Crystal has become world famous. Today, it produces luxury crystal that is sold around the world. When we visit, we are not just seeing a factory — we are visiting part of Ireland’s industrial history.
Inside the factory, students will see how crystal is made by hand. First, raw materials like sand and minerals are melted at very high temperatures — over 1,400°C! The hot liquid glass glows orange, like lava from a volcano. Skilled workers then shape it carefully. It takes many years to become an expert glass cutter. Even one small mistake can break the piece! Teenagers are often surprised that in the 21st century, many steps are still done by hand, not by machines.
Waterford Crystal is famous all over the world. For example, the crystal ball dropped every New Year’s Eve in New York City in Times Square is made by Waterford! The company also makes trophies for important sports events and beautiful chandeliers for luxury hotels. This shows how a small Irish company became an international symbol of quality and elegance. For Ireland, Waterford Crystal represents skill, tradition, and national pride.
The factory is located in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city. Waterford was founded by Vikings in 914 AD. The Vikings were warriors and traders from Scandinavia. They built a settlement here because it was close to the sea and good for trade. Today, Waterford still has Viking history, museums, and old walls. It is interesting to think that in the same city where Vikings once traded goods, we now produce luxury crystal sold worldwide!
